Windchill: A Strategic Step Toward Future-Proof Product Lifecycle Management
Windchill: A Strategic Step Toward Future-Proof Product Lifecycle Management

Introduction

After more than twenty years of loyal service, we at MechDes Engineering are saying goodbye to our trusted PDM system. For years it supported us in managing CAD files, revisions, and bills of materials. But standing still is not an option. In a world where technology is changing faster than ever and collaboration is becoming increasingly complex, the need for one central place where all product information comes together is growing.

The challenge was not a lack of data, quite the opposite. Precisely because of the increase in information from different disciplines, it became increasingly difficult to maintain overview. Engineering, production, work preparation, purchasing: everyone used their own sources and systems. To be able to work more efficiently, it was time for a next step.

We are taking that step with Windchill by PTC: a powerful PLM platform that enables us to manage information more intelligently, organize processes better, and truly collaborate in a multidisciplinary way.

From PDM to PLM: more than just a system change

To properly understand this step, it is important to explain the difference between PDM and PLM:

  • PDM (Product Data Management) focuses on managing technical data within engineering. It manages drawings, revisions, 3D models, and related documentation. Perfectly suitable for structuring CAD data, but limited to one discipline, in our case Mechanical Engineering.
  • PLM (Product Lifecycle Management), on the other hand, covers the entire product lifecycle: from the first concept sketch to production, and from service to end-of-life. It connects departments, systems, and people, all working with the same up-to-date data.

Where within the old PDM system we worked per department and repeatedly had to finish before the next step could begin, the new PLM system enables us to work simultaneously and multidisciplinary, continuously adding data and letting the design grow together. And that is exactly what we at MechDes need to remain future-proof. Our projects are becoming larger, more complex, and include more and more disciplines. Think of engineering machines in which mechanics, electronics, and software are closely intertwined. Then it is crucial that everyone works with one central truth.

With Windchill, we move from simple data storage with version control to integrated product management. In doing so, we build digital data packages that form the basis for a digital twin and provide better overview and control of parts within the AWL organization. These digital packages deliver concrete benefits for our customers, the service department, and purchasing.

One truth, one system

The foundation of our approach is clear: ‘One single source of truth.’ We strive for one central system in which all product-related information comes together, so that we can guarantee quality and optimally control processes. Not only bills of materials, but also versions, workflows, approvals, specifications, and releases. Everything is visible in real time for everyone who works with it.

To achieve this, it is essential that the setup of the system fits well with the way MechDes and AWL work. Disciplines have different information needs and processes. By carefully translating those into a uniform way of working in Windchill, calm and overview are created, without sacrificing flexibility.

Everyone now works with the same, up-to-date information. That prevents misunderstandings, accelerates processes, and makes it possible to collaborate better, both internally and with customers and suppliers.

In addition, the underlying workflows have been completely redesigned and set up. Every step in the process, from design and review to release, is recorded. Tasks are more easily assigned to the right role or department through smart filters that think along with you. This creates a clear process with clear responsibilities. Especially for projects that move toward series production, this is invaluable.

For engineers: information where you work

Our mechanical engineers work daily in SOLIDWORKS. That is why we included an important starting point in the project: "Information at your fingertips." All information an engineer needs must be directly available, without having to switch between multiple systems or separate tools.

To make that possible, we realized a smart integration between SOLIDWORKS and Windchill. A specially developed tool provides a seamless connection and automates repetitive actions. This not only saves time, but also increases the quality and reliability of data.

At least as important: it increases job satisfaction. Less clicking, less searching, less frustration. Engineers spend less time on repetitive work, which means more room for what engineers truly add value with: creativity and technical depth. Collaboration with colleagues also runs more smoothly: everyone looks at the same information, at the right moment. That provides calm and confidence in dynamic project environments.

Key functions within the SOLIDWORKS integration

  • Bounding box dimensions and structural member data are prepared automatically, so that this data is included in Windchill when saving a Solidworks Part or Assembly.
  • Material selection in SOLIDWORKS automatically determines a short dropdown list with suitable surface treatments. This way, the engineer only sees the treatments that are actually applicable to the selected material.
  • Correctly filling in SOLIDWORKS properties when using configurations, so that Windchill interprets them correctly.

This integration reduces the chance of errors and lowers the administrative burden. In this way, we create room for our engineers to do what they are good at and what gives them energy: engineering machines and coming up with smart solutions for a well-thought-out product design.

The result? More focus on engineering, less time on administration.

Ready for the future

For us, the implementation of Windchill is much more than an IT project. It is a fundamental choice for scalability, professionalization, and future readiness.

With this, we are building a digital working environment that, in collaboration with the broad disciplines of AWL:

  • structurally improves collaboration between disciplines
  • provides traceability and version control at a high level
  • optimizes handover moments through automation and structuring of the handover
  • is ready for integrations with ERP and other systems
  • creates new opportunities to have PLM take over traditional ways of working

That scalability is essential for MechDes and AWL. Our projects are not only becoming more complex, but we also work together with AWL in larger project teams. Windchill lays the foundation for the further digitalization of MechDes. Think of paperless work, change management, document control, validation processes, and even configuration management.

The MechDes ToolBox: complex in code, but invaluable in use because it offers simplicity to our engineers.

And at least as important: the system supports our partnership-oriented way of working. Because all project data is centrally and controlled available, we can collaborate more easily and transparently with customers, suppliers, and production partners. In this way, we not only deliver better products, but also an optimized process.
